چکیده

Introduction The primary purpose of this review was to focus on the gross anatomy, including morphometric characteristics and arterial vasculature, of the human cerebellar tonsil. We also aimed to investigate the neurosurgical anatomy of this clinically important structure of the human brain. Discussion The cerebellar tonsil is a rounded lobule on the undersurface of each cerebellar hemisphere, continuous medially with the uvula of the cerebellar vermis and superiorly with the flocculonodular lobe. Arterial branches entering the tonsil originate not only from the posterior but from the anterior inferior cerebellar artery as well, often anastomosing with those from the posterior. The main clinical conditions able to affect the position of the cerebellar tonsil include raised intracranial pressure, myelomeningocele, Chiari malformations, posterior fossa hypoplasia and Idiopathic scoliosis. The main neurosurgical approaches related to the region of the cerebellar tonsil include the transcerebellomedullary fissure approach, the tonsillouveal fissure approach (telovelar approach), the lateral approach to the fourth ventricle, the supraand subtonsillar approaches, the median and farlateral suboccipital approaches. Conclusion The position of the cerebellar tonsil can be affected in some congenital and acquired disorders including Chiari malformations and raised intracranial pressure. The high incidence of tonsillar arterial supply of single origin, partially explained by vascular anomalies such as arterial hypoplasticity, makes this structure potentially vulnerable to vascular accidents (mainly infarcts) of the inferior cerebellar arteries. A thorough understanding of the regional tonsillar anatomy, as well as its relations with the branches of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery is of paramount significance for neurosurgical interventions in this area.

Calcium Supplementation Ameliorates Cerebellar Oxidative Stress in Lactational Aluminum-induced Neurotoxicity in Rats

Introduction: The neurotoxic effects of aluminum exposure during the critical period of neurodevelopment have been well documented. This study investigated the known protective effects of calcium supplementation on the cerebellum of juvenile Wistar rats following aluminum-induced neurotoxicity during lactation. Methods: Four groups of juvenile rats were exposed via lactation to distilled water...

Spatial Memory, Motor Coordination, Cerebellar and Hippocampal Histoarchitectural Changes following Atropine Administration to Adult Mice

Atropine is a non-selective muscarinic receptor antagonist. In overdoses, atropine is poisonous. It is sometimes added to potentially addictive drugs, particularly anti-diarrhoea opioid drugs such as diphenoxylate or difenoxin. The aim of this study was to investigate spatial memory and motor changes associated with varying doses (5 and 10 mg/kg body weight) ingestion of atropine, as well as it...

A Rare Cause of Obstructive Chronic Hydrocephalus in an Adult Patient: A Case Report of Fourth Ventricle\'s Foramina Idiopathic Stenosis

Background & Importance: Idiopathic stenosis of the foramina of Magendie and Luschka is a rare cause of obstructive hydrocephalus involving the fourth ventricle. Case Presentation: We reported the case of a 40-year-old woman who developed headaches and vertigo for several months and more recently gait disturbance. The CT scan showed quadri-ventricular hydrocephalus involving mainly...

Gross anatomy of the oropharyngeal cavity in the ostrich (Struthio camelus)

There are significant structural differences between the mouth and pharyngeal cavity of birds and mammals. It is usual to refer to a common oropharyngeal cavity of birds because the soft palate, which forms such an obvious delineation between the mouth and pharyngeal cavity, is absent. Six male adult ostriches were used to study the oropharyngeal cavity and its components including the beak, ha...

Oleuropein Attenuates Deltamethrin-induced Apoptosis in Rat Cerebellar Purkinje Neurons

Background: Deltamethrin (DM) is a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide that can elicit neurotoxicity, and lead to apoptosis. There is accumulating evidence that oleuropein (OE) has anti-apoptotic effect. This study aimed at determining the DM toxicity and anti-apoptotic effect of OE pretreatment in cerebellar Purkinje neurons. Materials and Methods: Rats were randomly divided into four groups a...
